How have you been in your daily work since the Corona era? How well do you take care of yourself? And what about your environment?
We have been in an “exceptional situation” in the pandemic for more than a year. The initial crisis has mutated into a permanent state. Whether in the home office, with protective measures in the office, or especially in system-relevant professions, we are forced to go beyond our limits and neglect our needs. This additional burden has a permanent effect on our well-being: thoughts rotate, fears spread and the energy level drops. Mindfulness has been a popular term for many years, but the initial fad is gaining traction as the crisis progresses.
Years ago, research in neuroscience showed a connection between mental fitness and performance through mindfulness: Mindfulness is an original resource that protects against the effects of stress and balances the energy level. Mindfulness means consciously experiencing the present without being influenced by thoughts, memories and strong emotions and evaluating these perceptions. In this state of mind it is possible to concentrate on the present moment and to consciously perceive one’s own thoughts without judging and interpreting. Situations and how they effect our mental and emotional state are perceived, reflected on and processed in the moment. In this way experiences can be observed and processed or solved.
In practice, mindful behavior requires being reflective and aware of oneself, one’s feelings, actions and reactions. For example, anger and the resulting stress can be recognized and resolved in good time. The question “what makes me angry, what triggers this condition” enables the solution and the search for alternatives. We recognize the positive from the negative, and learn to avert the negative effects by suppressing or acting out on others. Mindfulness lets us deal with a situation differently. At the same time, old ballast can be let go and space can be created for new things. This inner attitude enables personal development and promotes resilience and calmness.
Mindfulness is a natural skill that can be trained and strengthened through practice. The aim is to focus on the present, to take a non-judgmental look at yourself and your surroundings, and to gain clarity. A key factor in mastering mindfulness is knowing about your own personality, especially needs, emotions and limits. Self-knowledge leads to a more conscious handling of oneself, one’s own thoughts, inner attitudes and evaluations. Individual coaching may help to take a deeper look at one’s behaviour and patterns. Practising perception, breathing and centering exercises enable you to integrate mindfulness into everyday life.
For leaders, mindfulness is increasingly the focus of attention and becomes a core quality. “Mindful Leadership” is about conscious corporate management and an organisational culture that actively promotes wealth and health management to strengthen their employees. Mindful managers are balanced, know their own needs and those of their employees. This balance has a positive effect on the team and the motivation of team members, especially in crisis situations. In addition to this role model effect, mindfulness influences the engagement of employees. Mindful leaders show their respect for people and their performance, and give recognition and appreciation. They actively promote the individual talents and qualities of the employees. Additionally, mindful managers can better recognize extremely stressed team members or stressful situations and react accordingly. Mindfulness as part of the management culture strengthens the social responsibility of companies.
Mindfulness promotes the ability to lead oneself and brings about a conscious handling of one’s personal energy balance. This inner attitude towards yourself and others increases resilience and well-being. At the same time, mindfulness helps to survive this permanent crisis and is one of the building qualities for new working environments. In the long run you will regain your balance both at work and in your private life and improve your joy of life.
